From January 26 to 28, the MIDEM Festival took place in Cannes, France, with famous guests such as Juniel, Tiger JK, Yoon Mi Rae, Bizzy, and the young DJ DHKT.

On Sunday the 27th, the Korean artists introduced their music to the French audience with amazing live performances along with interviews and conferences. Our team members over at Soompi France had the chance to meet Juniel for an interview! The lovely singer told us more about her song “Bad Man“, her experience with CNBlue’s Jung Yong Hwa as well as her debut in Japan. Check it out below and don’t forget to also check our exclusive interview with  Tiger JK, Yoon Mi Rae, Bizzy!

Congratulations on your successful comeback with “Bad Man”! Could you introduce the song to Soompiers?
“The song “Bad Man” is a pop ballad that expresses the feelings of a girl that has gone through a breakup.”

Why did you choose Japan to make you debut?
“In Japan, there were various music genres and many singers who played instruments while singing. I wanted to learn some more. I also wanted to experience different kinds of music. That is why I decided to go to Japan.”

Among all the songs of your two albums, which one is your favorite and why?
“I have written and participated in all the songs except for the title song “Babo.” Actually I like all my songs but the two songs which are “Boy” and “Everlasting Sunset” are my favorites because they were written after I went through my first love. This is why I am more attached to these two songs.”

Which K-Pop artists do you like?
“In Korea I like the artist named Kim Dong Ryul. If you listen to the melody or lyrics of his song, they contain the story of his life.”

You sang a ballad with Jung Yong Hwa (CNBlue). Can you tell us more about your experience?
“Actually CNBlue’s Jung Yong Hwa and I came into our agency on the same day. Since then during the five years until now, we have got to know each other and became close. When we were training we always talked about how we should do a duet after our official debuts. We got to work together on my debut album and my heart fluttered. That feeling made me happy and was very good.”

Have your parents always encouraged you to become a singer?
“My parents never told me that I had to become a singer. But they did tell me that they would like it if I pursued a dream I wanted to do.”

Is it your first time in France? What are your first impressions of the country?
“This is my first time in France. It is my first time in Europe or another foreign country besides Japan or Thailand. Just looking at the buildings gives me wonder. My heart is fluttering and I am having a good time. Also, everyone here is so nice.”

What final message would you give to your French fans?
“Hello this is Juniel. I have come to France for the first time because of the MIDEM Festival. When I saw the French night sky for the first time I thought that the moon was very white and pretty. I hope that I will be able to come here again so, please continue to show interest in Juniel. Please continue to cheer me on as well.”

CNBLUE, Paving the Way for K-POP Bands

Rock band CNBLUE have been experiencing remarkable success performing live stages and have possibly opened the door for how music bands are represented on television.
CNBLUE started the year with outstanding success with their, some would say, best comeback ever. On January 14th, the band released their long awaited Korean comeback album ‘RE: BLUE’, which quickly won over all the music charts and sales listings. CNBLUE had a major hit on their hands and were about to unleash it on all of Korea and the world.
From the beginning, the band had the idea that they wanted to perform all live stages on as many music show appearances as they could. It is not very common for band artists to perform with full live instruments on many of Korea’s music shows mainly because of the huge production costs and labor behind the performance set up. These obstacles were something CNBLUE and label mates, FTISLAND among others, have had to deal with since their debut. CNBLUE have been touted as an Idol band and have been accused of not being a “real band” mainly because many only viewed them on stage hand syncing to their music as this was the practice of most music shows on TV. Despite their obvious musical talents, CNBLUE were portrayed in the media as pretty “Flower” boys until now.

CNBLUE were determined to start show promotions for ‘RE: BLUE’ with all live stages. Not letting previous obstacles stand in their way for this comeback, they made sure all the provisions for their live stages would be covered by the band. The difficulties of this possibility such as production labor, venue, and equipment rentals as well as supporters in the form of fans to fill the audience all had to be taken into consideration for them to be able to pull it off. The outcome, they would prerecord their live stage performances in front of a live audience to be broadcast at a later date.
For two weeks in a row, CNBLUE have consistently appeared on TV with prerecorded live instrument stages and are still going strong. They have made history being the first band to perform live stages on various Korean television music shows, shedding their “Idol band” media image in the process. While it’s a feat that they should be proud of, it’s even more impressive that they may be single handedly changing the way bands are treated and represented on television from now on. While the live stage production still poses an expensive issue, CNBLUE have shown that it is a problem that can be overcome successfully.
CNBLUE still continue their stages for a third consecutive week starting with a KBS Music Bank performance on February 2, 2013.
